INDIANAPOLIS -- Despite a dominant performance in the first half, Cleveland State dropped a 1-0 decision to IUPUI in overtime on Saturday in a Horizon League match in Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
The Jaguars claimed the victory when Maya Lacognato scored at the 4:22 mark of overtime. Lacognato took a feed from Valentine Pursey ahead of the Viking defense and shot high. Cleveland State keeper Stevie Holbrook jumped and got a hand on the ball, but the ball trickled past Holbrook and just crossed the goal line to lift IUPUI to the win.
Cleveland State, which fell to 4-7-3 overall and 2-3-1 in the Horizon League, dominated play in the first 45 minutes of action. The Vikings held a 9-2 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks, but could not put one past Sophia Lipka.
The Vikings had several scoring opportunities in the opening period, including shots by Grace Krosky and Sydney Hamker that just slid outside the goal and a point-blank effort from Essence Canady that was answered by Lipka.
IUPUI turned the tables on the Vikings in the second half as the Jaguars owned an 8-3 edge in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. IUPUI had the only two shots in overtime.
Cleveland State received two shots each from Grace Grant, Canady, Hamker and McKenna Donahue, while Krosky, Briana Niedermeier, Helena Novatsidis and Toni Dickson each had one shot.
The Vikings return to Krenzler Field to close out the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday (Oct. 23) at 7 p.m. against Detroit Mercy.
