MATCH RECAP

CLEVELAND -- Junior Elena Gutlove scored in the 107th minute to lift Cleveland State to a 2-1 victory over Akron in the Vikings home opener on Sunday on Krenzler Field.

Gutlove, who transferred to Cleveland State from Butler, scored the game-winning goal in her first career appearance on Krenzler Field. She received the ball on the left wing and dribbled back to the middle of the field and buried the game-winner in the right side of the net to lift the Vikings to their first victory of the season.

Cleveland State, which improved to 1-0-1 on the season, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second minute when Brianna Niedermeier converted from the left angle.

Akron, which dropped to 0-2-0 on the season, tied the match before halftime when Charley Kale scored off a pass from Lucia Lobato to knot the match at 1-1.

The Zips held a 7-3 advantage in shots in the second period, but neither team could break the deadlock.

Cleveland State owned the only two shots of the first overtime, but CSU keeper Stevie Holbrook and Akron keeper Libby Harper kept the match tied.

Holbrook improved to 1-0-1 on the season as she turned aside six shots, while Harper fell to 0-2 on the season for the Zips.

Akron finished the match with a 15-9 advantage in shots and held a 4-1 lead in corner kicks.

Cleveland State returns to action on Friday (Aug. 30) when it travels to Athens, Ohio to face Ohio University at 4 p.m.
