Vikings Pick Up 2-0 Victory At Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's soccer team was able to remain undefeated in Horizon League play Wednesday night, as the Vikings picked up a 2-0 victory at Youngstown State. With the win, the Vikings are now 6-4-1 overall this year and 2-0-1 in league action.

For just the second time in program history the Vikings are undefeated through three Horizon League matches, as Cleveland State also went 3-0 to start the 2015 campaign.

After a scoreless first part of the contest, Cleveland State was able to get on the board in the 38th minute with an own goal following a YSU miscue in front of the net.

Just a few minutes into the second half the Vikings were able to add an insurance goal, as they were awarded a penalty kick after a foul was called in the box. Dani Sowinski was able to convert the penalty kick, putting the Vikings up 2-0 in the 49th minute.

The goal was the first of the season for Sowinski, and the sixth of her career.

Despite YSU controlling play for a large part of the second half, the Viking defense was able to keep the Penguins off the board and give the Cleveland State offense more chances to extend its lead throughout the last 45 minutes.

Cleveland State tallied 22 shots on the match, including 12 on goal, while Youngstown State managed just five shots on the night.

Stevie Holbrook recorded two saves against the Penguins, picking up the win and posting her third shutout of the season.

The Vikings will return home on Saturday (September 29), hosting UIC at 4:00 p.m. to continue Horizon League play.
