Vikings Season Comes to an End in League Tournament on Penalty Kicks

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The 2017 season came to an end for the Cleveland State women's soccer team on Monday night in the first round of the Horizon League tournament at IUPUI. After playing to a 1-1 tie, the Jaguars advanced to the League semifinals on penalty kicks, 4-2.

THE GOALS

  • The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when Aliani Lorenzo scored her fourth goal of the year. McKenna Vento tallied the assist on the goal, her fifth of the season and 10th of her career, which ranks third all-time in school history.
  • Lorenzo took a pass from Vento and fired a shot from 30 yards out.
  • Both Lorenzo and Vento were named to the All-Horizon League second team earlier in the day.
  • IUPUI tied the match at 1-1 at the 78:11 mark on a goal from Valentine Pursey whose shot from 35 yards out to the right post just got by the out-stretched arms of Jamie Daniels.

THE SHOOTOUT

  • IUPUI scored on each of its four shots in the shootout, while goalkeeper Sophia Lipka made two saves for the Jaguars.
  • Katie Bainbridge and Jenna Prathapa scored in the shootout for the Vikings.

IN THE NET

  • Jamie Daniels made seven saves in goal for CSU, finishing her career with 247 saves to rank third all-time in program history.
  • Daniels made several saves in overtime, including one in the closing seconds of the second overtime that she punched out over the crossbar to keep the match tied at 1-1.

THE SENIORS

  • Tonight's match marked the end of the careers of CSU two seniors - Daniels and Bainbridge.
  • Daniels concluded her career with 247 saves and 12.5 shutouts, both second in program history.
  • Bainbridge, who played in 74 career matches - tied for seventh all-time in school history - wrapped up her career with 17 points on three goals and 11 assists. Her 11 assists are tied for the second most in school history.

THE 2017 SEASON

  • Under the direction of first year head coach Dallas Boyer, the Vikings finished the year with a 9-9-1 overall record and 5-4 in the Horizon League.
  • The nine wins are tied for the second most in a season in school history, while the five League wins were tie for the most in a season in program history.
  • CSU advanced to the Horizon League tournament for the first time since 2015 this season.
  • CSU scored 28 goals this year, tied with the 2014 team for the most in a season in school history, while the 224 shots this year were a school record.
  • The Vikings had four players reach double digit points this year, the first time in program history that more than two players accomplished the feat. Jenna Prathapa led the team with 15 points, while Vento had 13. Dani Sowinski finished with 12 points and Grace Grant totaled 10. Lorenzo's goal tonight pushed her season total to nine points, just shy of becoming the fifth player with double figure points.
