Week #5

THE OPENING KICK:
    •    The Cleveland State women's soccer team opens Horizon League play when the Vikings host Valparaiso on Friday (Sept. 16) at 7:00 pm at Krenzler Field.
    •    CSU is 3-5 overall after splitting its final two non-conference matches of the season last weekend.
    •    Valparaiso is also 3-5 this year after splitting two matches last weekend. The Crusaders earned a 2-0 win over Fort Wayne, but fell at Western Michigan, 3-2, in overtime.
    •    The Vikings are 1-11 all-time against Valparaiso, which includes a 1-0 setback at Valpo in double overtime in last year's regular season finale.
    •    CSU won last year's Horizon League opener, 1-0, at home over Detroit.

RECAPPING LAST WEEK:
    •    The Vikings split their final two non-conference matches of the season last week, falling 1-0 at Toledo on Friday and earning a 1-0 victory over St. Bonaventure on Sunday at Krenzler Field.
    •    McKenna Vento scored her first career goal in the 67th minute for the lone goal in the match vs. St. Bonaventure.
    •    Jamie Daniels made six saves to earn the shutout, while the trio of KK Smith, Megan Barrick and Toni Dickson all played 90 minutes for CSU in the backline to help the Vikings earn the shutout.

FREE KICKS:
    •    All three of CSU's wins this year have been shutout victories. The Vikings own 2-0 wins at Canisius and Niagara and a 1-0 victory vs. St. Bonaventure.
    •    The Vikings are one of five Horizon League teams with three non-conference wins, joining Milwaukee, Oakland, Northern Kentucky and Valparaiso.
    •    Senior Kaila Sargema and freshman Aliani Lorenzo are tied for fifth in the Horizon League with three goals this year.
    •    Sargema ranks third in school history in goals (15) and points (34). She is four goals shy of tying Natalie Daniels (2008-11) for second place on the all-time goals list and 19 points behind Vickie Havas (2012-15) for second place.
    •    Lorenzo ranks second in the Horizon League with 1.17 points per game. She is tops on the team with seven points.
    •    Junior Jamie Daniels is tied for the Horizon League with three shutouts this season and ranks third in school history with eight career shutouts.
    •    Junior Katie Bainbridge enters the weekend with seven career assists, tied for sixth in school history. She is three assists shy of becoming the fifth player in program history with 10 career assists.
    •    Daniels, Toni Dickson and Sargema are the only players who have started all eight matches for the Vikings this year.

UP NEXT:
    •    The Vikings continue Horizon League play with a 7:00 pm match at Oakland next Saturday (Sept. 24).
    •    CSU returns home to host Wright State in a League match on Wednesday (Sept. 28) at 7:00 pm at Krenzler Field.
