Vikings Drop Exhibition Opener to Buffalo

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Haleigh Shingary and Kaila Sargema scored goals, but the Cleveland State women's soccer team dropped its exhibition opener to Buffalo, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Krenzler Field.

The teams battled through heat and humidity over three, 30-minute periods with the final period being delayed for almost an hour due to lightning in the area.

Shingary gave the Vikings an early lead with a goal in the 14th minute when she took control of a Buffalo turnover inside the box and beat the Bulls goalkeeper. Buffalo knotted the contest at 1-1 just 10 minutes later and added two goals in the second 30-minute period to extend the lead to 3-1.

Four minutes after the match resumed in the third period after the weather delay, McKenna Vento was taken down in the box and Sargema converted a penalty kick to slice the deficit to 3-2. However, Buffalo added another goal in the 81st minute.

CSU will play its second and final exhibition match of the preseason on Sunday (Aug. 14) when the Vikings host Kent State at 1:00 pm.
