Sargema's Game-Winner With 21 Seconds Left Helps CSU Hand Northern Kentucky First League Loss

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Kaila Sargema scored two goals, including the game-winner in double overtime with 21 seconds left, as Cleveland State earned three points with a 2-1 victory over previously undefeated Northern Kentucky on Saturday night.

The Vikings improved to 8-6-1 overall and 4-2 in the Horizon League, while NKU fell to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the league.

After a scoreless first half, the Norse took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick from Macy Hamblin at the 61:13 mark.

It remained that way until just 5:29 remained in regulation as Sargema headed in her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Dani Sowinski. It was Sowinski's first career collegiate point.

In the overtime sessions, both teams had chances to end the contest, but it wasn't until Sargema finished a chance with 21 seconds left that clinched a key three points for the Vikings.

Sargema took a feed from Ashley Thiss just inside the box and fired a shot to the opposite post, past the reach of the NKU goalkeeper to end the contest.

Sargema now leads the Vikings with six goals this season and increased her career total to 10, tied for sixth in school history.

Jamie Daniels made nine saves the CSU to earn the win in goal.

CSU is back in action on Wednesday (Oct. 21) when the Vikings conclude a three-match roadtrip with a 7:00 pm match at Wright State.
