Ypsilanti, MI-The Cleveland State women's golf team is in action once again this week, traveling to the Shirley Sport EMU Invitational hosted by Eastern Michigan University at the Eagles' Eagle Crest Golf Course starting Monday. This marks the third tournament for the Vikings in the four-tournament fall 2023 schedule. The course will measure 6,159 yards and play to a par of 72.
Cleveland State comes in with momentum following a strong showing at the YSU Roseann Schwartz Invitational last week. The Vikings finished second, just one shot behind the tournament host Youngstown State. Kaitlin Kormuth and Mandie Ruminski recorded top-5 finishes, with Kormuth placing fourth and Ruminski finishing fifth.
The Shirley Spork Invitational will feature a field of 11 teams. The Vikings are one of five Horizon League schools in the field, with the other six schools coming from the Mid American Conference. Detroit Mercy, Purdue Fort Wayne, Green Bay and Oakland are the others representing the Horizon League.
The tournament will utilize a play six, count four format, allowing for an additional lineup compared to the traditional five-player lineup at most college events. Kormuth and Ruminski will be joined in the lineup by Olivia Swain, Brynna Mardis, Lola Barnett and Abby Blacburn. Blackburn makes her first start after playing as an individual in the previous event.
The tournament will consist of 54 holes, with the first two rounds scheduled for Monday and the third round on Tuesday morning. Play begins with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start, with the Vikings set to tee off on holes 9-12 to begin the day.
