Brynna Mardis wins Medalist Honors in Playoff, Cleveland State Women’s Golf Second at IUPUI Lady Jaguar Invite

Carmel, IN-It was a banner day for the Cleveland State women's golf team in the final regular season competition of the 2022-23 season. Brynna Mardis and Sabrina Coffman both finished tied for first at the conclusion of 36 holes with Mardis prevailing in a four-way playoff on the first extra hole. The Vikings finished second as a team with a 41-over par total, just six shots back of host IUPUI.

Mardis began the day at even par after an opening round 72. She finished the front nine at 4-over but played rock solid golf on the back nine, closing with an even par 36 for a total of 76 (+4) on the day and a 4-over total for the two rounds.

Coffman started the day at 5-over after carding a 77 in the first round. She was the only player in the field to finish in red figures in the second round, closing with a 1-under round of 71. Coffman's second round was the best in the field by four shots. She made four birdies including two in the last four holes which got her to 4-over and into a tie for first place.

That sent Mardis and Coffman, along with IUPUI's Annaliese Fox and Detroit Mercy's Ariel Chang back to the par-3 16th hole for a playoff for the top spot. Mardis hit a beautiful tee shot on the 173-yard hole that finished about five feet from the hole. She calmly made the ensuing birdie putt to secure the victory.

The win is the first for Mardis, a freshman, in her career and is the second in two weeks for the Vikings. Coffman took home the title at the EKU Colonel Classic on April 4th. Mardis' 36-hole score of 148 is also a season low.

Coffman posted her third straight top-10 finish and fourth of the year. Three of those four have been in the top five.

In addition, Lexi Knight closed with a 78 to finish in a tie for 16th place at 11-over par. Knight started the back nine with back-to-back birdies on the way to a 1-under 35 on the back side.

Olivia Swain finished 52nd with a score of 23-over par. Mandie Ruminski finished tied for 59th with a final tally of 27-over. Abby Blackburn, playing as an individual, also finished tied for 59th

The Vikings now turn their attention to the Horizon League Championship tournament coming up next week at Mission Inn Resort in Florida. The tournament begins next Sunday, April 23rd.
