YPSILANTI, Mich. – Junior Kaylee Neumeister is tied for the lead and helped the Cleveland State University women's golf team to a second-place mark at the halfway point Monday at the Shirley Spork Invitational.
Hosted by Eastern Michigan, the event is being held at the par-72, 6,176-yard Eagle Crest Golf Club. CSU is in second place at +14 after shooting 302 in the opening round.
With heavy fog in the area Monday morning, the tournament was reduced from 54 holes to 36 holes as opening-round tee times had to be pushed back until late Monday morning.
Neumeister is tied for the lead with Sophia Trombetta of Michigan as the duo shot -2 (70) in the opening round. The 70 is a season low for Neumeister and ties her career low. Neumeister opened with a birdie on the par-5 10th and added two more birdies against a single bogey on the back nine to shoot -2 for her first nine holes. She ended her day like she started it as she birdied the par-5 ninth to finish with two birdies and two bogeys on the front half. Her five birdies led the field Monday.
Sophomore Madison Butler shot +1 on each nine to finish at +2 (74), leaving her in a tie for ninth. She tied for the lead in par-4 scoring, shooting a combined -4 on the par-4's.
Freshman Meg Rossouw, who was playing in the lineup for the first time as a collegian, and classmate Grace Zimmerman both shot +7 (79) Monday while sophomore Ashley Knight finished at +10 (82).
Cleveland State led the field in par-4 scoring in the first round, averaging 4.20 strokes per par-4.
Neumeister joined Butler as two of the four players in the field to play the par-4's under par for the day. Zimmerman tied for second in par-3 scoring at -1 for the day.
Neumeister's 70 was the fifth round in program history of 70 or better with the junior owning three of those five rounds.
The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played Tuesday with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. Cleveland State will be playing with third-place Western Michigan and first-place Bowling Green in the final round and will tee off on holes 1-4.
