Cleveland State Women’s Basketball Stays Perfect At Home With 90-58 Victory Over IUPUI

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's basketball team remained perfect during the month of January, picking up a 90-58 victory over IUPUI on Saturday. With the win, the Vikings improve to 17-3 overall this year and move to 8-1 in Horizon League play to move into a tie for first place in the league standings.

Game Stats
-Mickayla Perdue and Colbi Maples led the Viking offense, Perdue with 22 points and Maples with 20.
-Sara Guerreiro led the Vikings with seven rebounds on the day.
-As a team, the Vikings shot 53-percent from the floor, including a .643 clip during the second quarter.
-The Vikings tallied 14 assists, with five from Colbi Maples.
-Cleveland State's defense recorded 15 total steals, including four from Carmen Villalobos.
-The Vikings forced IUPUI into 28 turnovers, turning these miscues into 42 points.

Game Notes
-Colbi Maples and Mickayla Perdue both tallied their seventh 20-point games of the season, marking the third time this year that two Vikings have recorded 20+ points in the same game.
-Saturday's 90 points marked the third 90+ point game of the season for the Vikings.
-With 15 steals, the Vikings have now recorded double-digit steals in five straight games.
-Cleveland State improved to 11-0 at home this season, and picked up its 17th straight home win.
-The Vikings are now tied for first place in the #HLWBB standings with an 8-1 league record on the year.

The Game
Once again the Vikings were able to get out to a quick start, gaining a double-digit lead midway through the first quarter at 14-4 following a pair of Mickayla Perdue free throws. IUPUI answered with a pair of baskets, but another 2-for-2 effort at the free throw line from Shadiya Thomas put the Vikings back up 16-8 with 3:43 left to go in the first quarter.

The two teams then traded baskets over the final minutes of the opening frame, with Cleveland State holding a 19-15 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The second quarter was evenly matched over the opening minutes, until a 5-0 run from the Vikings regained a double-digit lead for CSU at 35-25 following a Faith Burch layup. Although the Jaguars were able to stop the scoring run, a Perdue three-pointer at the 2:47 mark put the Vikings up 38-27. Cleveland State was then able to take a 44-30 edge into the halftime break, following a Colbi Maples layup as time expired.

After trading baskets to begin the third quarter, the Vikings extended their lead to 51-35 at the 6:23 mark following a Brooklynn Fort-Davis and-one. Cleveland State was able to hold a 10+ point lead for the remainder of the frame then, including stretching its advantage to 15 points at 64-49 on a Sara Guerreiro layup late in the quarter, before taking a 64-51 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.

The Vikings carried their momentum into the fourth quarter, as five straight points to begin the frame put Cleveland State up 69-51 on a Perdue three-pointer. The Vikings then controlled play throughout the rest of the frame, outscoring IUPUI 26-7 during the final 10 minutes to pull away with the 90-58 victory.
