Cleveland State Women’s Basketball’s Hot Shooting Leads To 72-61 Victory At Wright State

FAIRBORN, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's basketball team had its best shooting night of the season Wednesday, picking up a 72-61 victory at Wright State following a 60-percent night from the field. With the win, the Vikings are now 16-3 overall and 7-1 in Horizon League play.

Game Stats
-Five Vikings finished the game in double-figures, led by Colbi Maples with 17. Brooklynn Fort-Davis added 16 points, Jordana Reisma finished with 15, Mickayla Perdue chipped in 12 and Sara Guerreiro added 10.
-The Vikings shot 60-percent for the game, including a .846 clip during the first quarter.
-Sara Guerreiro and Carmen Villalobos both grabbed a team-best six rebounds.
-As a team CSU finished with 10 steals, including three from Carmen Villalobos.

Game Notes
-Brooklynn Fort-Davis notched a season-high with her 16 points, shooting 7-for-9 from the field on the game.
-Cleveland State's .604 clip from the floor marked a season-high and the fifth time over 50-percent this season.
-This marked the fourth straight game with 10+ steals and 10th overall this season.
-This marked the first time this season that Cleveland State had five players finish with 10+ points.
-Cleveland State picked up its fifth straight win and remained perfect during the 2024 calendar year.

The Game
After a back-and-forth start to the game, a Mickayla Perdue and-one midway through the first quarter gave the Vikings an early six-point lead at 14-8. The Vikings were then able to gain a double-digit lead at 24-13 following a trio of baskets from Colbi Maples and Perdue, before another Maples jumper as time was expiring put Cleveland State up 27-14 after the first 10 minutes of play.

Cleveland State carried its momentum into the second quarter, as a 7-0 run to open the frame gave the Vikings a 20-point lead at 34-14 following a Jordana Reisma layup less than two minutes into the frame. The Vikings were able to hold their sizable lead throughout the rest of the quarter then, with a Brooklynn Fort-Davis layup in the final seconds putting CSU up 49-30 heading into the halftime break.

The Vikings were once again able to get out to a quick start over the opening possessions of the third quarter, with back-to-back baskets from Reisma and Villalobos giving the Vikings a 53-30 advantage just over 30 seconds into the frame. Cleveland State was then able to withstand a Wright State run over the remainder of the third quarter, holding on to its 63-47 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Although Wright State was able to trim the lead to 11 points over the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, a Fort-Davis jumper put the Vikings back up by 13 at 65-52 with 7:04 left on the clock. Cleveland State then slowly extended its lead once again over the next few minutes, as a pair of Reisma free throws regained a 16-point advantage for the Vikings at 72-56 at the 2:41 mark.

Cleveland State was then able to come away with the 72-61 victory, improving the Vikings to 8-2 this season when scoring 70 or more points.

The Vikings will return home for its final time during the month of January on Saturday, hosting IUPUI at 5:00 p.m. as the second game of a doubleheader with the Cleveland State men's team.
