Cleveland State Women’s Basketball Comes From Behind To Earn 70-63 Victory Over Southern Miss

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Cleveland State women's basketball team opened the Homewood Suites Classic with a win on Wednesday, earning a come-from-behind 70-63 victory over Southern Miss. With the win, the Vikings are now 10-2 on the season.

Game Stats
-Four Vikings finished the game with double-figure points, led by Mickayla Perdue with 24 points. Colbi Maples added 18 points, Jordana Reisma chipped in 12 and Carmen Villalobos added 10.
-Cleveland State combined for 51 rebounds, including 13 from Faith Burch, 11 from Carmen Villalobos and 10 from Jordana Reisma.
-The Vikings combined for 13 assists on the day, including seven from Colbi Maples.
-The Cleveland State defense recorded seven steals and forced Southern Miss into 16 turnovers.

Game Notes
-Jordana Reisma recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
-Carmen Villalobos tallied her first double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
-With her team-high 13 rebounds against Southern Miss, Faith Burch tallied a career-high.
-Mickayla Perdue notched her third straight 20-point game after finishing with 24 points against Southern Miss.
-Wednesday's game marked the second of a five-game roadswing for the Vikings.

The Game
After getting behind early in the first quarter, the Vikings were able to work their way back into the contest throughout the second frame, as a 5-0 run to start the quarter brought Cleveland State within six points at 23-17 before a Mickayla Perdue three-pointer at the 5:39 mark put the score at 25-20.

The Vikings were then able to trim the lead to three points at 25-22 following a pair of Colbi Maples free throws, before both teams traded baskets over the next few possessions. Cleveland State was once again able to trim the lead to three points on a Jordana Reisma layup with just over one minute left in the frame, but Southern Miss closed out the second quarter with a six-point lead at 34-28.

To open the third quarter the Vikings went on a 6-1 run, trimming the lead to just one point at 35-34 on a Perdue layup just over two minutes into the frame. The two teams were evenly matched over the final part of the third quarter then, with Southern Miss regaining a five-point lead at 48-43 heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

After once again chipping away at the Southern Miss lead over the opening possessions of the fourth quarter, the Vikings were able to trim the lead to 57-56 on a Maples layup, while the ensuing free throw on the and-one play tied the contest at 57-57 with 4:35 left on the clock.

Although a Southern Miss free throw on the next trip down the floor put the advantage back to the Lady Eagles, a Perdue three-pointer in response gave the Vikings a 60-58 lead with 4:05 left to play.

The two teams then traded baskets over the next few possessions, before an 8-for-10 effort from the free throw line over the final 1:47 from Maples, Villalobos and Faith Burch secured the 70-63 victory for the Vikings.
