Cleveland State Women’s Basketball Opens Viking Invitational With 62-57 Win Over Austin Peay

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's basketball team opened up the Holiday Inn Express Cleveland Downtown Viking Invitational Wednesday, picking up a 62-57 victory over Austin Peay. With the win, the Vikings improve to 3-1 on the season.

Game Stats
-The Viking offense was led by Destiny Leo and Colbi Maples who combined for 43 points.
-Carmen Villalobos grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
-As a team, the Vikings recorded seven steals on the day, including two each from Destiny Leo, Colbi Maples and Carmen Villalobos.
-Cleveland State forced Austin Peay into 20 turnovers on the game.

Game Notes
-Wednesday's game marked the first of three games as part of the Holiday Inn Express Cleveland Downtown Viking Invitational.
-This year's Viking Invitational is being played at Woodling Gymnasium, the former home of Viking Basketball.
-This marked the third 20-point game of the season for Destiny Leo who finished with 22 points, while Colbi Maples tallied her second 20-point game with 21 points.
-Jordana Reisma notched three blocked shots for the second straight game.

The Game
After trailing by five at the halftime break at 31-26, the Viking defense was able to hold Austin Peay off the board through the first three minutes of the third quarter, closing the gap to 31-28 with a Jordana Reisma jumper.

After trading baskets over the next few possessions, a Colbi Maples steal and layup knotted the score at 33-33, before Cleveland State regained a 35-33 advantage with a Destiny Leo basket midway through the third quarter. The Vikings then closed out the frame on a 9-4 run, taking a 45-37 lead into the final 10 minutes of action.

Cleveland State then extended its lead to double-digits to begin the fourth quarter, as a Maples jumper put the score at 47-37 just over a minute into the frame. The two teams then traded baskets over the next few possessions, until a Leo jumper at the 4:09 mark put the Vikings back up by 10 points at 53-43.

The Vikings were then able to hold off a late Austin Peay run, with a handful of free throws over the closing minutes maintaining the lead for the Vikings, as they came away with the 62-57 victory.
