Cleveland State Women’s Basketball Opens #HLWBB Play With 77-54 Win Over Oakland

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's basketball team opened #HLWBB play Friday evening, picking up a 77-54 win over Oakland inside the Wolstein Center. Friday's win extended Cleveland State's current win streak to six straight games, while the Vikings stand at 6-1 on the season.

GAME STATS
· Four Vikings finished the game in double-figures, led by Destiny Leo with 19 points. Amele Ngwafang added 15 points, while Gabriella Smith tallied 14 and Brittni Moore chipped in 10.
· Amele Ngwafang grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds on the night, while Brittni Moore added seven and Gabriella Smith tallied six.
· As a team, the Vikings recorded 12 total assists, including four from Brittni Moore.
· Cleveland State combined for nine blocked shots on the day, including three from Faith Burch and two from Brittni Moore.
· The Vikings shot 47-percent from the field on the game, including a .529 clip during the fourth quarter.

GAME NOTES
· Amele Ngwafang notched her first double-double of the season – and the third of the year for the Vikings – after finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds against Oakland.
· After finishing with nine blocks on the night, the Vikings have now recorded at least three blocked shots in all seven games this year.
· Cleveland State has now started #HLWBB play 1-0 four times under head coach Chris Kielsmeier.
· With the win, the Vikings extended their current win streak to six straight games, and remain perfect in the Wolstein Center this season.

THE GAME
Cleveland State was able to take a 33-27 lead into the halftime break, after a Brittni Moore three-pointer to end the second quarter gave the Vikings a six-point advantage after the first 20 minutes of play.

The Vikings were able to quickly add to their lead to start the third frame then, as a 9-0 run gave Cleveland State a 42-27 advantage on a Gabriella Smith layup with 6:25 left on the clock to force an Oakland timeout.

Cleveland State was able to hold a sizeable lead for the remainder of the frame then, taking a 17-point advantage at 53-36 into the final 10 minutes of action after posting a perfect 4-for-4 effort from the free throw line over the last minute of the quarter.

The two teams traded points over the first few possessions of the fourth quarter then, until a Destiny Leo steal and three-pointer gave the Vikings a 22-point advantage at 64-42 with just over six minutes left on the clock.

Another three-pointer from Leo just 46 seconds later gave the Vikings a 67-43 lead, before yet another Leo three-pointer at the 4:45 mark snapped an Oakland scoring run to give Cleveland State a comfortable 70-47 lead.

The Vikings then went on to hold a 20-point advantage over the final few minutes of the contest, coming away with the 77-54 victory in Friday's Horizon League opener.
