Vikings Begin Second Half Of #HLWBB Play With Win Over Detroit Mercy

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Behind Mariah Miller's second straight double-double, the Cleveland State women's basketball team posted a 67-51 victory over Detroit Mercy Thursday evening, starting the second half of Horizon League play in the win column. With the win, the Vikings improved to 8-13 overall and 5-5 in league action.

The Game
After both teams played a tight first quarter that ended in Cleveland State holding a slight 11-10 advantage, the Vikings were able to extend their lead over the opening minutes of the second frame, as they posted a 10-1 run over a two-minute span that put the Vikings up 21-14. After forcing a Detroit Mercy timeout following their 10-1 run, the Vikings were able to post another 7-3 run out of the timeout, gaining their first double-digit lead at 28-17 with 3:39 left in the first half.

The Vikings then closed the half with a basket from Mariah Miller and a Savanna Crockett free throw, taking a 31-17 lead into the halftime break.

Cleveland State was then able to extend its lead over the opening possessions of the third quarter, as the Vikings posted a strong defensive effort that led to a 6-0 run to give the Vikings a 20-point lead at 37-17. The Vikings were then able to hold a sizable advantage over the rest of the frame, as they went into the final 10 minutes of play with a 51-31 lead.

Although the Titans were able to work their way back into the contest throughout the fourth quarter, the Vikings were able to hold off the late Detroit Mercy push, and closed the quarter on an 8-4 run to come away with the 67-51 victory.
