Vikings Fall At Toledo, 66-53

TOLEDO, Ohio – Despite a strong first 10 minutes of play, the Cleveland State women's basketball team came up short at Toledo Saturday afternoon, falling to the Rockets, 66-53. The loss snaps Cleveland State's mini two-game winstreak, and puts the Vikings at 2-5 this season.

Game Stats
· Ashanti Abshaw was just shy of a double-double, posting a team-high 18 points along with nine rebounds.
· Khayla Livingston also notched double-digit points for the Vikings, finishing with 12 points and five assists.
· Kayla Patterson recorded a career-high with nine points and tied her career-best with three rebounds.
· The Vikings recorded 10 steals on the game, and forced Toledo into 16 turnovers.

Game Notes
· Ashanti Abshaw notched her seventh straight double-digit game, finishing with 18 points.
· As a team, CSU notched double-digit steals (10) for the sixth time this season.

The Game
For the second straight game Cleveland State got out to a quick start, opening the first quarter gaining a 7-3 lead just 2:18 into the game. The Vikings then went on to outscore the Rockets 12-6 over the final 5:57 of the first frame, gaining a 10-point advantage at 19-9 after the first quarter. Ashanti Abshaw recorded 10 of Cleveland State's 19 points during the opening frame, including a 2-for-2 mark from behind-the-arc.

Toledo responded during the second quarter, opening the frame on a 12-0 run to erase Cleveland State's 10-point lead. Throughout the final 5:22 of the frame, Toledo held the Viking offense to just eight points, as the Rockets went into the halftime break with a one-point lead at 28-27.

The Vikings were able to come out of the halftime break and regain a lead just 22 seconds into the frame, after a Kayla Patterson layup put the score at 29-28 Cleveland State. The lead wouldn't last long though, as Toledo responded with a 7-0 run that put the Rockets back on top, 35-29. Cleveland State was able to tie the game once again at the 35-35 mark following another Patterson layup at the 4:48 mark, but the Rockets closed out the frame on a 12-1 run that put them back up 47-36.

Although the fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle for both teams, Toledo was able to hold a sizeable advantage throughout the frame and outscore CSU 19-17 over the final 10 minutes to come away with the 66-53 victory.
