Wrestling Squad Earns Special Mention In Intermat Rankings

Aug. 31, 2001

The Cleveland State University wrestling squad received a special mention from Intermat Wrestling in a preseason poll released August 27. It is a welcome sight for the Vikings after three seasons of rebuilding under Head Coach Jack Effner.

"It's nice to know we are receiving some national coverage and showing that we have quality kids here," commented Effner. "It's extra incentive for our guys, but we still have to go out and get the work done."

Along with the team's special mention, Gerald Harris, Russ Davie and Nick Boucher ranked among the nation's top 20 in their respective weight classes. Rocco Mansueto and Phil Mansueto earned special mention while Anthony Coleman received an honorable mention.

Harris (Tulsa, Oklahoma/East Central), a junior checked in at 9th at 174 pounds, marking the first time a CSU wrestler has cracked the top 10 since Dan Carcelli did it at 134 pounds in 1995. Harris currently leads the team in wins with 53 over two years. During a redshirt season last year he won the Eastern Michigan Open, Ashland Eagle Open and Cleveland State Open. Harris also placed second in the Oklahoma Open.

Sophomore heavyweight Davie (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) locked in at 10th in the nation. The 1999-2000 EWL "Freshman-of-the-Year" recently qualified for the U.S. National Team by placing seventh in Greco-Roman style at the U.S. Open in May.

A senior who went 2-2 at last year's NCAA Championships, Boucher (Sunfield, Michigan/Lakewood) was ranked 18th at 141 pounds. He finished third in the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Championships at 133 pounds last season.

Junior Rocco Mansueto (Middletown, New York/Middletown) received the special mention at 125 pounds after qualifying for the NCAA Championships last season. The co-captain spent most of the second half of the year recovering from a separated shoulder, but came back in time to place second in the EWL Championships.

Junior Phil Mansueto (Middletown, New York/Middletown) took a redshirt year last season, but also earned a special mention at 133 pounds. An NCAA qualifier in his freshman year, Mansueto won the Ashland Eagle Open and the Cleveland State Open while placing second at the Eastern Michigan Open last season.

Coleman (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue), last season's "Outstanding Wrestler" for CSU, earned an honorable mention at 149 pounds. Another one of CSU's promising young wrestlers, the sophomore went 25-16 in a redshirt freshman year. During the 1999-2000 season he went 22-15 as an unattached wrestler.
