Cleveland State Wrestling Announces Signings

A pair of wrestlers from Akron's St. Vincent-St. Mary High School - Adam Buzek and Mike Hurley - have signed national letters-of-intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at Cleveland State University, Viking Head Coach Jack Effner has announced.

The Ohio state champion at in Division II this past season at 140 pounds, Hurley compiled a 43-2 mark in his final campaign. Hurley, a member of the Ohio Junior National Team, was a two-time state runner-up in Division III, falling just short of the title in both his sophomore (130 pounds) and junior years (135 pounds). Hurley completed his four-year career with the Irish with a 162-16 record. His most recent accomplishment was finishing as the runner-up at 135 pounds at the National High School duals. Hurley is projected to compete at 141 pounds for the Vikings.

Projected collegiately at 125 pounds, Buzek compiled a 136-27 record at SVSM. He won the Ohio Division III state championship as a junior at 112 pounds when he went 42-5 and finished fifth as a senior in 2002 at 119 pounds in Division II. Buzek also went 33-5 as a sophomore.

"We are very excited to sign two of Ohio best and they will make an immediate impact in our practice room," said Effner. "Both have proven they can perform at a very high level and will push our now-veteran team for starting positions."

Cleveland State, which posted a 6-8 mark in dual meets last season, finished fifth at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships. The Vikings graduated just one from that squad and return NCAA qualifiers Phil Mansueto, EWL champion at 133, his brother Rocco Mansueto and Gerald Harris.
