CSU Wrestler Phil Mansueto Keeps All-America Hopes Viable At NCAA Championships

Kansas City, Mo. - Viking senior Phil Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) won a pair of matches at 133 Friday morning in the third round of the NCAA 2003 Division I Wrestling Championships to keep his All-America hopes alive.

In his first match, Mansueto slipped past Cal-Bakersfield's Matt Sanchez 5-4 and followed with a 5-1 victory over Purdue's Rene Hernandez. In Session 4, Mansueto, the 11th seed, will face seventh-seeded Josh Moore of Penn State.

Three Vikings were eliminated from competition in consolation matches, including Eastern Wrestling League champions Rocco Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) at 125 and Gerald Harris (Tulsa, Okla./East Central) at 184. Mansueto lost 8-5 to Matt Valenti of Penn. Meanwhile, the seventh-seeded Harris posted a 2-1 tiebreaker victory over Ohio State's Casey Kaputska in his first consolation bout before being upset by unseeded Ralph DeNisco of Wisconsin, 9-4.

In addition, heavyweight Russ Davie (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) bowed out of the championships with a 2-1 loss to Purdue's Israel Blevins.

As a team, the Vikings have six points and are tied for 37th with Appalachian State and Sacred Heart. Oklahoma State, which sent 10 wrestlers to the championships, leads the team competition with 78 points.
