CSU Grapplers Win Last Five Matches To Post Win Over Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. - After falling behind early, the Cleveland State wrestling team improved to 13-5 Saturday as the #25 Vikings dumped Virginia Tech 26-15 at Cassell Coliseum.

The win gives CSU a 5-1 Eastern Wrestling League mark, setting up a showdown at West Virginia Sunday for the league title in the regular season finale.

The match opened at 141 where Hokie Jim Miller pinned Matt DePolo (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) in 2:40 to five Tech an early 6-0 lead. CSU's Anthony Coleman (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) earned at 5-2 victory over Reed Carpenter at 149 to put CSU on the board. However, after a forfeit at 157, the Vikes trailed 12-3.

At 165, Jason Effner (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) picked up two points in the final period to take a 4-2 decision over Mike Cox but Matt Klinger (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/) lost a heartbreaker in overtime 5-4 to Steve Borja.

Trailing 15-6, the Vikings closed out the match with five straight victories. At 184, #4 Gerald Harris (Tulsa, Okla./East Central) and #14 Scott Justus battled until Harris recorded a takedown in the third period for a 6-4 win. The Vikes recorded a major decision at 197 as Stipe Miocic (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) had six takedowns and a reversal as well as over four minutes of riding time to take a 19-4 win over Shaun Guttridge.

#17 Russ Davie (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) blanked Pete Pool 13-0 at heavyweight for another major decision which helped the Vikings take the lead for the first time. A technical fall by #18 Rocco Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) in 5:23 over Geoff Head and a 15-4 major decision by #13 Phil Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) over Dalton Head closed out the match.
