EVANSTON, Ill. - Robbie Michaels, Aric Thurn and Chris Weber earned victories against Northwestern on Saturday (Dec. 4), but the Cleveland State wrestling team lost to the Wildcats, 32-9.

"We had some good performances," head coach Ben Stehura said. "After losing yesterday at Eastern Michigan, we took what we learned from that loss and applied it today. We improved across the board, and it showed as we had some good wins."

Michaels picked up the first win of the night for the Vikings (1-2), defeating Kevin Bialka in a 9-6 decision at 165. CSU also won the following match, with Thurn beating Robert Kellogg, 5-2, at 174.

Weber ended the Vikings' day on a positive note, edging Bennett Kuhar, 4-3, in the heavyweight division. Weber scored the winning points on a takedown with 15 seconds left in the final round.

Nick Flannery, wrestling at 133, was impressive in a losing effort. Taking on Levi Mele, the No. 23 grappler in the country in that weight class according to the most recent WrestlingReport.com poll, Flannery ended the third round tied with Mele, 5-5, but Mele was awarded a tie-breaking point for having more than a minute of riding time in the match.

"It was a hard fought match and a good performance by Flannery," Stehura said. "It was a good turn around after losing yesterday, and it shows what he's capable of."

Cleveland State will take a break from dual meet competition to host the CSU Open at Woodling Gym on Saturday (Dec. 11). The competition will begin at 9:00 a.m.
