Phil Mansueto Falls One Win Shy Of All-American Standing.
After reaching the fourth round of the consolation bracket by grabbing back-to-back 3-1 decisions, 133-pounder Phil Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) fell to Iowa State's Zach Roberson, 4-0. Had Mansueto won he would have clinched at least an eighth-place finish at the Division I NCAA Championships in Albany, N.Y. But CSU's junior went 3-2 in the tournament and reached the farthest point for the Vikings since Dan Carcelli earned All-American status in 1995.

Mansueto had a tough day of wrestling, edging out Boise State's Jesse Brock, 3-1 in the second round of the consolations and beating Virginia Tech's David Hoffman by the same score in the next round. Yet Roberson, who dropped to the consolations after a quarterfinal loss to top-seeded Ryan Lewis of Minnesota, stopped Mansueto one round shy of an All-American standing.

Mansueto was the lone Viking left in the tournament, as 174-pounder Gerald Harris (Tulsa, Okla./East Central) was eliminated after his second loss earlier in the day. Harris fell in the second round of the wrestlebacks to the Air Force's Terry Parham, 5-0.

Mansueto defeated Eastern Illinois' Pat Dowty in round one, 6-2. However, he fell to Ohio State's Jeff Ratliff in the second round, 8-4. It was Ratliff's second win against Mansueto this season.

Harris fell during the first round to Oregon State's Nathan Coy, 4-1. But Harris, who received a wild card to the tournament, came back in the first round of the wrestlebacks. The junior edged out Nebraska's Tony Denke, 4-3, to advance to the second round of the consolations.

CSU's other qualifiers, 125-pounder Rocco Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) and 141-pounder Nick Boucher (Sunfield, Mich./Lakewood) fell in both the championship and consolation rounds Thursday. Mansueto lost to Michigan State's Chris Williams, 13-5 and was pinned by Boston University's Jose Leon in 39 seconds.

Boucher fell to 11th-seeded Robert Sessley of Ohio State in the first round, 10-4. The Vikings' lone senior also lost in the wrestlebacks to Mark DiSalvo of VMI, 7-2.
