Vikings Win Hard Fought Battle Against Clarion 21-12

Cleveland - Cleveland State opened up with a 7-0 lead over Clarion University in Eastern Wrestling League action Thursday evening at Woodling Gymnasium and the Vikings came out victorious in a hard fought 21-12 battle.

The Mansueto brothers started the senior night festivities on the right foot by recording their final victories at home. At 125 Rocco Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) gave the Vikings an immediate cushion by recording a major decision over Peter Derstine. Fellow senior Phil Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown), ranked #12 at 133, followed with a 9-3 decision over #14 Rad Martinez. At 141 junior Matt DePolo fought hard but was beaten 12-5 by Frank Edgar.

Junior Anthony Coleman (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue), who recently dropped out of the rankings, was unfazed as he wrestled well and recorded a 3-1 win over Jim Perry at 149.

At 157, true freshman Josh Ging (Mantua, Ohio/Kenston) fought hard but was not successful as he lost to Jeremy Reitz 8-1, giving Clarion its second win of the night.

However, the Vikings came right back as Jason Effner (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield) picked up a win at 165 by defeating Chris Horning 3-2 on ride time. At 174, Matt Klinger (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) wrestled well and won 3-1 against Dave Gardner on a takedown at the 0:18 mark in overtime.

At 184, #4 Gerald Harris (Tulsa, Okla./East Central) put on a show in his final home match as he recorded a 22-7 technical fall against Eric Spence, giving CSU a 21-6 team lead. For Harris, it was his 110th career victory and puts him just two wins away from the school record of 112 set by Toby Matney from 1976-79 at 158 and 167 pounds.

Junior Stipe Miocic ranked #18 wrestled hard but lost a very close match to # 13 Eric Mausser 7-6. Junior heavyweight Russ Davie Perrysburg,OH/Perrysburg) ranked #18 finished the match with a tough loss to #11 John Testa.

With two dual matches to go, the Vikes are assured of a winning season as they moved to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in EWL action.

The Vikings will be in action next Saturday, February 8 at Virginia Tech the match is at 7:30 p.m.
