CLEVELAND, Ohio - Three Vikings picked up wins, including one by fall, but the Cleveland State wrestling team dropped a 34-12 decision to Bloomsburg on Saturday (Feb. 5).
"We had a couple guys wrestle well, and that gave us a chance halfway through the meet," head coach Ben Stehura said. "We'll just go back to the practice room and work on some things and get ready to go for next weekend."
CSU took the first match of the day, with Ben Willeford winning the 125 bout in a 3-1 decision. Bloomsburg's Sean Boylan scored the first point on an escape in the second round, but Willeford responded with a takedown and added an escape in the third to seal the victory.
Bloomsburg went up 10-3 after winning the 133 bout by major decision and the 141 by fall, but the Vikings cut the lead to one when Lawrence Cavello won his 149 match against Matt Hicks with a pin.
Cavello followed a scoreless first round by maintaining riding time for the entire second round, scoring three points on a near fall. He added an escape and a takedown in round three to increase his lead to 6-0. Cavello eventually gained control of both of Hicks' shoulders to win by fall at the 6:34 mark.
Bloomsburg pushed the lead up to 15-9 with a technical fall in the 157, but Michaels cut the lead to three with a 4-1 decision in his 165 match.
Michaels began his bout with a quick takedown of Bloomsburg's Josh Veltre and maintained control for the duration of the first two rounds. After beginning round three in the down position, Michaels earned a point on an escape and added a bonus point on 4:15 riding time.
That was as close as CSU would get, however, as Bloomsburg won the next three matches with two falls and a major decision.
The Vikings (3-10, 0-3 EWL) will be in action with two meets next weekend. Cleveland State will travel to Pittsburgh for a meet with the Panthers on Friday (Feb. 11) before returning to Woodling Gym for a home meet against Clarion on Saturday (Feb. 12). Both meets will begin at 7:00 p.m.
