Final Stats

The Cleveland State wrestlers earned their first Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match of the season with an impressive 27-10 win over Bloomsburg. The victory was especially sweet for Head Coach Jack Effner, whose Vikings had not defeated Bloomsburg in seven consecutive seasons.

Effner pulled his team aside before the match to remind them that the Huskies won last year, 37-9. But the fourth-year coach demanded that the Vikings be aggressive this year. And that's exactly what he got. The Vikes came out firing, grabbing technical falls in the first two bouts of the night and never looking back.

Senior 141-pounder Nick Boucher (Sunfield, Mich./Lakewood) started the evening by dominating Adam Castner. After falling from the top 20 this week, Boucher had something to prove. The co-captain used a series of three tilts in the first period, two for three-point near-falls and one for a two-point near-fall. In the second period Boucher went back into the tilt, grabbing two more three-point near-falls to end the match in 5:00. He did not surrender a point in the 16-0 win.

149-pounder Anthony Coleman (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) also got back on track for the Vikings. The sophomore took two single-leg takedowns and a three-point near fall in the first period to go up, 7-1. He went back to work in the second frame, reversing on Brandon White and catching him in three near-falls. Coleman's last tilt ended the match in a 16-1 technical fall at 4:32.

Stipe Miocic (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) also won by technical fall for CSU at 197 pounds. The sophomore used a combination of single and double-leg takedowns against Andy Ludlon. Miocic led by just two points after the first period, but got hot in the last two frames. In the second he grabbed two takedowns and worked in a tilt for a 9-1 lead. In the last period he took Ludlon down three times and got the technical fall with riding time, 18-3.

In the lightweight bouts the Mansueto twins sealed the victory with two decisions. Rocco Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) defeated a tough opponent in Brock Hite. The 125-pounder was able to reverse on Hite twice in the bout, winning 10-5. Phil Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) nearly pinned Mark Piermettei in the first 30 seconds with a single-leg takedown that dropped Piermettei right on his shoulders. But the junior settled for a 12-5 win.
