Viking Wrestlers Cruise To 30-6 EWL Win Over Lock Haven

Jan. 31, 2003

CLEVELAND - Cleveland State opened up with a 14-0 lead over visiting Lock Haven in Eastern Wrestling League action Friday night at Woodling Gymnasium and the Vikings coasted to a 30-6 win over the Bald Eagles.

The Vikings, who received votes in the most recent Amateur Wrestling News poll, improved to 9-5 in dual matches and 2-1 in the EWL while Lock Haven dropped to 10-7, 1-1.

At 125, #18 Rocco Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) gave the Vikings an immediate cushion by scoring a technical fall in 6:27 over Jim Collins. Fellow senior Phil Mansueto (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown), ranked #13 at 133, followed with a 9-5 win over Justin Owens while junior Paul Theodore (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) held on for an 8-6 win over John Holsinger at 141.

Junior Anthony Coleman (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue), who moved into the rankings earlier this week for the first time this year at #20, notched an 11-5 decision over James LaValle at 149 to give CSU a 14-0 advantage.

At 157, true freshman Josh Ging (Mantua, Ohio/Kenston) was pressed action, giving up a red-shirt year due to a season-ending injury to Chris Kallai (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) at the CSU Open last Saturday. In a spirited match, Charlie Brenneman beat Ging 5-2 to put Lock Haven on the board.

However, the Bald Eagles fell behind 20-3 after forfeiting at 165. CSU's Jason Effner (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield) picked up the win. At 174, Matt Klinger (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) and Chris Gaines battled to a 3-3 tie in regulation before Gaines got the takedown with eight seconds remaining in overtime.

#4 Gerald Harris (Tulsa, Okla./East Central) didn't have an easy time with LHU's Mike Greenberg at 184 but the senior pulled out a 3-2 win for a 23-6 team lead which assured CSU the win.

At 197, Stipe Miocic (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) scored the upset of the evening, muscling out a 5-3 win over #10 Morgan Horner to improve to 16-5 on the season. Heavyweight Russ Davie (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) closed out the CSU scoring with a 10-1 decision over Steve Itterly.

The Vikings will be in action again Sunday for another EWL match against Bloomsburg beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Woodling Gym. Preceding the college match, Maple Heights High School and University School will wrestle at 1 p.m.
