CLEVELAND - Matt DePolo and Mike Hurley earned placing finishes at the CSU Open on Saturday afternoon at Woodling Gymnasium. DePolo finished fourth at 149, while Hurley was second a weight class down at 141.
Hurley opened his day with a 10-0 major decision over Bryan Rizzo of Maryland before taking a 4-1 win over West Virginia's Nino Paglia. In the semifinals, he defeated Indiana's Brian Dyer, 3-1, before falling, 11-6, to Northwestern's Ryan Lang in the final.
DePolo started slowly, falling to Central Michigan's Eric Neil, 12-4, in his first match of the day. The senior from Bellevue then went on a run in the consolation bracket, winning five straight bouts, with one major decision, to advance to the third-place match, where he lost to Tony Guerra by an 8-3 count.
The Vikings return to the mats as a team on Fri., Jan. 30, when they head to Ohio University for the final non-league dual match of the season. Friday's match begins at 7:30 p.m. in Athens, Ohio.
