NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Cleveland State wrestling squad competed in the Rutgers Quad on Saturday (Jan. 15), dropping three matches. The Vikings fell to Rutgers (47-0), Army (39-3) and the US Merchant Marine Academy (28-16).
Five Viking picked up wins on the day. Corbin Boone (wrestling at 184) was CSU's sole winner against Army, picking up a 2-1 overtime decision vs. Robert Doyle.
The other four wins came against USMMA. Nick Flannery won a 17-5 major decision against Pat Graham at 133. Josh Palivoda, wrestling at 141, won, 11-6, against James Beshada. Lawrence Cavello (149) earned an 8-2 decision against Martin Bell while Matt Donohoe (157) pinned Dan Twito in 4:09.
"This was a tough day for the team, but it gave us a chance to compete with some very good wrestlers," head coach Ben Stehura said. "We'll take what we learned from today and use to improve in future meets."
The Vikings will be in action again next Sunday (Jan. 23) when Cleveland State hosts Lock Haven in its EWL opener. The meet will be held in Woodling Gym and begin at 1:00 p.m.
