BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Cleveland State wrestling team went 2-1 in its first quad meet of the season, defeating Gardner-Webb, 31-12, and SIU Edwardsville, 31-7, while dropping a 44-3 decision to Indiana. The wins improved CSU to 3-4 on the season, with all three victories coming on the road.
"A number of guys had great performances today," head coach Ben Stehura said. "This was a good team effort."
Robbie Michaels was one of several Vikings who turned in impressive performances at the Indiana Quad. The senior went 3-0 on the day, including a pin against SIU Edwardsville's Gabe Hocum, an 8-0 major decision over Gardner-Webb's Erin O'Dell and a 9-3 win over Ryan LeBlanc of Indiana. The victories moved Michaels over the 70-win mark, as he now has won 72 matches as a Viking.
Ben Willeford pinned two of his three opponents. He won in a 1:36 fall against Gardner-Webb's Brett Kostern and pinned Paul Meyers of SIU Edwardsville in 3:21. Nick Flannery also won two matches on the day, pinning Alex Hamm of Gardner-Webb in 3:34 and earning a 12-6 decision vs. SIU Edwardsville's John Petrov.
Nick Anthony earned his first two dual meet victories of the season, winning decisions against Robert Cooney (SIUE) and Travis Porter (GWU).
Although Michaels had CSU's only victory against Indiana in the first match of the day, the team rebounded to win eight of 10 matches in the victories over Gardner-Webb and SIU-Edwardsville.
"In every match we got better," Stehura said. "We're improving as a team, and it showed in the results we had today."
The Vikings will have a week to prepare for their next test, another quad meet in New Brunswick, N.J. on Saturday (Jan. 15) at 1:00 p.m. Cleveland State will wrestle Rutgers, Army, and the US Merchant Marine Academy.
