Cleveland State Wrestling Falls to Rider in the Last Regular Season Dual

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State (8-8, 6-3) was downed in their final dual of the year at home to Rider University (8-7, 8-0) by a score of 23-12 on Friday afternoon.

Rider secured the first three points of the day with a 4-1 sudden victory at 125-pounds. The Broncs doubled the margin behind a 7-2 decision at 133-pounds.

Cleveland State cut the deficit in half at 141-pounds as Dylan Layton picked up a 3-0 shutout to trail 6-3. A 15-3 major decision at 149-pounds and a 6-5 decision at 157-pounds extended the advantage to 13-3.

Following the intermission, Daniel Patten picked up a 4-1 decision at 165-pounds to get within 13-6. However, back-to-back decisions for Rider pushed the margin to 19-6.

No. 33 Ben Smith secured the final points of the day for the Vikings with a fall in 3:35 at 197-pounds to trail 19-12. Rider then took the last match behind a 16-2 major decision to win the match 23-12.

The Vikings will begin preparations for the 2024 MAC Championships on March 8-9 at Kent State.
