Cleveland State Wrestling Announces 2023 Recruiting Class

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Head coach Josh Moore of the Cleveland State University wrestling team announced the signing of nine student-athletes to the class of 2023. The class includes six from Ohio along with one from Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. 

The Vikings are coming off their best showing at the MAC Championships with a program-best seven placers with all of those finishes coming in the top six, the most of any school. The Green and White also claimed seven dual victories on the year, with six of those coming against MAC schools. Cleveland State was 5-2 on the year at home.

"I am extremely excited about this class of young men," said head coach Josh Moore. "All these guys fit our mold of being excellent students while performing at a high level on the mat. They will add depth to an already strong roster and create competition in their respective weight classes."

In the classroom, Cleveland State turned in the second-best GPA of all Division 1 teams for the NWCA Scholar All-America award with a 3.54. This finish marks the best in program history. The Vikings also had three Scholar All-Americans.

Ruben Pina-Lorenzana | Oberlin, Ohio | Firelands High School | Projected 125/133

  • A two-time Division II state placer.
  • Took third during his junior season.
  • Placed eighth as a freshman.
  • Ranked second in the state before suffering a season-ending injury as a senior.
  • Reached 150 career wins during his senior season.

Landen Duncan | West Farmington, Ohio | Chalker High School | Projected 133/141

  • A four-time state qualifier.
  • Finished as the runner-up at the state championship as a junior and senior.
  • Placed fourth in his sophomore season.

Connor Saylor | Hermitage, Pa. | Hickory High School | Projected 141/149

  • A four-time state qualifier.
  • A three-time placer at the state championship, finishing sixth twice and fifth once.
  • Named to the Erie Times-News District 10 All-Star team.
  • Capped off his career with 144 overall wins.
  • Graduated with a 4.0 GPA and will major in engineering. 

Ethan Mitchell | Findlay, Ohio | Findlay High School | Projected 149

  • Qualified for the state championship as a senior.

AJ Parish | Perrysburg, Ohio | Perrysburg High School | Projected 157

  • Placed sixth at the state championship as a senior.
  • Twice won an NLL championship.

Gavin Ricketts | Henderson, Ky. | Union County High School | Projected 174/184

  • A four-time state qualifier.
  • Placed second twice and third once.
  • Named a Fargo All-American.
  • Graduated with a 4.40 GPA and will be in the Honors College.

Kaiden Haines | Minerva, Ohio | Minerva High School | Projected 197

  • Twice qualified for the state championships.
  • Placed third during his senior year.
  • Came in sixth during his junior season.

Mekhi Bradley | Mansfield, Ohio | Mansfield High School | Projected 285

  • Twice qualified for the state championships.
  • Placed fourth and seventh at the championships.

Shane Cook | Whitehall, Mich. | Whitehall High School | Projected 285

  • Won the Division 3 state championship as a senior with a 62-0 record.
  • Closed his high school career with a 172-16 record.
  • Totaled 118 career pins, 42 of them in his final season.
  • Placed third as a junior.
