Cleveland State Wrestling Places Nine at Michigan State Open With One Champion

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Cleveland State opened the 2022-23 season at the Michigan State Open on Saturday. The Vikings finished the day with nine placers with one championship. The Vikings will next compete in their first dual at home on Friday, November 11 against No. 18 Pitt at 7 p.m. inside Woodling Gymnasium.

Open Division
The Vikings had four placers in the open division led by third-place finishes from Anthony Perrine and Daniel Bucknavich. Jake Manley and DeAndre Nassar each took fifth on the day.

The 11 wrestlers combined for ten decisions, four falls, and one major decision.

Freshman/Sophomore Division
Cleveland State had five placers in the freshman and sophomore division paced by Dylan Layton as the champion at 141-pounds.

The eight Vikings in the division recorded 12 decisions, five falls, one major decision, and one technical fall.

Layton won the 141-pound championship with a 4-0 record. The freshman recorded three decisions and one fall with his first collegiate victory coming on a 32-second pin.

JR Reed finished as the runner-up at 174-pounds after dropping a major decision in the championship match. The freshman registered two falls and a decision with his first collegiate victory coming on a fall in 6:28 in round one.

Nick Molchak placed third at 125-pounds after putting up a 4-1 record with three decisions and one fall. The freshman dropped his first match of the day before rattling off four straight wins.

Tate Geiser finished fourth at 174 pounds after falling overtime of his third-place match. The freshman lost his opening match before winning three straight to compete for third.

At 157-pounds, Nick Abounader placed fourth after going 1-2 on the day.
