Six Vikings Go Unbeaten in Season Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team opened its season Saturday by hosting Kent State inside Woodling Gymnasium.

The teams faced off in a round-robin format that featured simultaneous matches on two mats with two rounds of competition. There were 35 total bouts contested on the day.

Six Vikings were unbeaten on the season's opening day, including a quartet that won twice.

Redshirt junior John Kelbly (285), sophomore DeAndre Nassar (184), true freshman Daniel Patten (157/165) and redshirt sophomore Riley Smucker (165) all started their season 2-0.

While Kelbly, Nassar and Smucker are all returning MAC placers, the rookie Patten's strong start was especially notable—his wins came at different weight classes as he tallied a 4-3 win at 165 pounds before knocking off Kent State's current starter at 157 pounds with an 8-2 decision.

Kelbly's wins were about as different as they come. He prevailed in his opening bout in the first tiebreaker period. After tallying an escape in the first half of the extra frame, he rode out his opponent for the entire 30 seconds to hold on for a 2-1 win. After needing more than seven minutes to collect his first win, his second victory came in less than regulation time. He racked up back points en route to a 16-0 technical fall that ended in the second period.

Nassar netted the only takedown of his opening bout to claim a 3-2 win before he followed that up with an 8-3 victory in his second match. Smucker also gave up just five points across his two wins, posting an 8-3 win in his opening bout before picking up a 5-2 win in his second bout.

Redshirt freshman Joseph Caprella (141) and redshirt senior Ryan Ford (157) each won the lone bout he contested Saturday with relative ease. Caprella posted a 12-3 major decision win while Ford just missed getting the major as he posted a 14-7 victory. Caprella's win was his first as a Viking after transferring in during the offseason.

Six other Vikings each won a bout Saturday, two of which netted their first collegiate victory.

True freshman Daniel Bucknavich won his first-ever collegiate bout with an 8-3 win at heavyweight. Meanwhile, classmate Jake Manley tallied a 5-3 win in sudden-victory fashion in his second bout of the day at 125 pounds.

After dropping his first bout of the day to a top-10 national opponent, redshirt freshman Anthony Rice bounced back to collect a 10-6 win at 174 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Marcus Robinson moved up a weight class in his second bout and posted a 10-3 win at 157 pounds. Both Vikings tallied their first victory in a CSU singlet Saturday.

Redshirt senior Justin Patrick won his opening bout with a thrilling, 7-5, victory in overtime at 133 pounds. Unfortunately, he lost his second bout via injury default.

Junior Ben Smith won his second bout of the day at 197 pounds, 5-2, after he dropped his opening bout of the day in the waning seconds of the match.

Cleveland State won six of the 10 bouts that pitted projected CSU starters against projected Kent State starters.
