Cleveland State Signs Four More From Ohio

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Head coach Josh Moore of the Cleveland State University wrestling team announced Tuesday morning that four Ohio student-athletes are staying home as they have formally committed to continue their careers with the Vikings.

Justin Jaeckin (Olmsted Falls High School), William Lindsey (Hawken School), Aaron Morton (Westerville South High School) and Gabe Phillips (Norwalk High School) all committed to the program this spring and will join CSU for the 2020-21 academic year.

Jaeckin was a two-time Division I state qualifier and was projected to place at 220 pounds at the OHSAA Championships this past March. He went 36-5 in his senior season and was the runner-up in the Perrysburg District. He racked up 39 wins in a junior season that saw him compete in the state tournament at 195 pounds. Jaeckin was a Southwestern Conference champion who also played football. Jaeckin, who owns 138 high school wins, projects at 197 pounds for the Vikings.

Lindsey was a two-time state qualifier and was projected to place at 285 pounds at the OHSAA Championships this past March. He won Berkshire Sectional and Garfield Heights District titles as a senior, posting pins in all four of his district tournament wins within 75 seconds. Lindsey went 40-2 as a senior after tallying a 47-3 mark as a junior when he competed in the state tournament at 285 pounds. He won five bouts via pin in the 2019 postseason while winning his first career sectional and district titles. Lindsey, who owns 147 high school wins, projects as a heavyweight for the Vikings.

Morton placed fourth at the 2019 Division I state tournament at 160 pounds and was projected to finish at least that high again this past March. He went 41-5 as a junior while becoming the first athlete to place for his school since 2006. Morton won the Newark Sectional and Hilliard Darby District titles this past season, finished 43-3 on the year and was tabbed Ohio Capital Conference Buckeye Division Wrestler of the Year. He was a Cadet Greco-Roman All-American in 2018. Morton, who collected 133 high school wins despite first taking up the sport of wrestling in his freshman year of high school, projects at 157 or 165 pounds for the Vikings.

Phillips was a two-time state placer at 182 pounds, finishing among the top six as both a sophomore and a junior. He was the top-ranked wrestler and the favorite to win the state title at 195 pounds this past March. He was 30-0 in his senior season and won Sandusky Sectional and Norwalk District titles, posting pins in six of seven bouts, en route to qualifying for the state tournament. Phillips posted a 43-8 mark as a junior while winning his first sectional and district titles. Phillips was a first-team all-region selection on the mat and was also a significant contributor in football, including helping Norwalk to a state semifinal berth in 2018. Phillips, who tallied 145 high school wins, projects at 184 or 197 pounds for the Vikings.

Both Morton and Phillips were named Honorable Mention for the top high school seniors at their weight class by USA Wrestling Magazine in April. Additionally, Jax Leonard, who signed with CSU last November, was listed among the top 20 seniors at 170 pounds.

Seven Vikings placed at the 2020 MAC Championships in March, with five outpacing their seed. As a result, Cleveland State finished in the top half of the team standings at the event after being tabbed to finish dead last in the final pre-championship coaches' rankings. Cleveland State's nine dual wins were its highest such figure in 13 years.
