Vikings Named NWCA Scholar All-American Team

The Cleveland State University wrestling team was honored for its academic success Thursday afternoon by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Cleveland State came in 30th in the NWCA's annual Top-30 Scholar All-American team standings. The Vikings posted a 3.1582 grade point average. It marks the fourth time in the past six years that CSU has placed among the top 30 in this ranking.

Five Viking starters from this past season own cumulative GPA's of at least 3.25.

Cleveland State finished in the top half of the Mid-American Conference in team grade point average. As a result, the Vikings were one of only four programs to finish in the top half in both team GPA and MAC Championship finish.

The NWCA determined team GPA's using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. A total of 10 of these came from the wrestlers that were entered in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier.

Seven Vikings placed at the 2020 MAC Championships, with five outpacing their seed. As a result, Cleveland State finished in the top half of the team standings at the event after being tabbed to finish dead last in the final pre-championship coaches' rankings. Cleveland State's nine dual wins were its highest such figure in 13 years.
