CLEVELAND, Ohio - Redshirt senior Evan Cheek placed at the prestigious Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, as he competed on the second and final day of the event Thursday inside Chattanooga's McKenzie Arena.

Cheek placed seventh at 141 pounds, the second time placing at this event in his career as he also did so in 2018.

Cheek captured a victory in his first bout of the day, taking down his opponent from Oregon State via major decision. After netting a takedown in the first period, he secured a pair of two-point near falls to claim a six-point edge after three minutes. He rode his opponent for the entire second period and notched an escape and a point for riding time to finish off the win.

In the consolation quarterfinals, Cheek was matched up with a MAC foe that he defeated in dual action fewer than two weeks ago. However, his George Mason foe got the better of him in this matchup, claiming a four-point win.

Cheek won the seventh-place bout courtesy of a medical forfeit by his opponent from N.C. State.

Cheek now owns a 23-3 record this season and has 13 bonus-point victories.

CSU has now had at least one placer in each of the past five Southern Scuffle tournaments it has attended.

Cleveland State finished in 22nd place in the team scoring with 20 points as Oklahoma State won the event.

Cleveland State will resume action in just over a week as it heads to a quad dual hosted by VMI Friday, Jan. 10.
