CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team will look to take momentum from the end of January into early February as they compete in two events this weekend.

CSU will take a step out of conference action Friday, Feb. 1, to host local foe Kent State at 7:00 p.m. The Vikings will then have their final bracket-style event of the regular season as they head to the Edinboro Open Saturday, Feb. 2.

A high school dual featuring squads from Grand Valley and Norwayne will take place in advance of CSU's Feb. 1 dual and begin at 5:30 p.m. Tickets will be required for the high school dual with one ticket permitting entrance to both the high school dual and CSU's dual. Ticket sales will begin on site at 4:00 p.m. Ticket prices will remain the same as they are for all home CSU duals ($7 for adults and $5 for youths under 12).

The 30th annual Edinboro Open will begin Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Wrestling will be done to six places with no team scores being kept. Edinboro is anticipating over 250 wrestlers competing with action taking place on eight mats. Live results and live video ($) will be available on FloWrestling.

The Vikings picked up their first EWL win last time out, claiming a 27-15 victory over Bloomsburg. CSU won seven of 10 weight classes, including pins by senior Sam Matzek and redshirt freshman Brady Barnett at 141 pounds and 149 pounds, respectively.

Barnett, who was subsequently named the EWL's Wrestler of the Week, now has 15 wins this season, including a team-leading seven pins. He also is tied for the team lead in dual points won (35) with redshirt senior Armando Torres.

Torres, who won a 7-2 decision over his opponent from Bloomsburg at 133 pounds, improved his team-leading win total to 26 last time out. He also tops the squad with eight dual wins and 13 bonus-point wins.

Other Vikings to pick up wins against the Huskies were redshirt sophomore Nico O'Dor at 157 pounds, redshirt sophomore Ryan Ford at 165, true freshman Ben Smith at 197 and junior Collin Kelly at heavyweight.

Kent State enters the weekend with a 6-12 mark having lost each of its five duals since the turn of the calendar year. However, six of KSU's losses on the season came to nationally ranked foes, including losing to four of the top seven teams. CSU and KSU'S two common opponents are Buffalo and Edinboro, with the Golden Flashes beating the Fighting Scots and losing to the Bulls. Sophomore Andrew McNally leads KSU with 26 wins and owns 12 pins, the latter of which ranked third in Division I entering the week.

CSU is 8-20-1 all-time against the Golden Flashes. The teams have met in 19 of the past 22 years, including each of the past two. However, this is the first time that the Vikings have hosted Kent State since CSU's home-opening dual of the 2010-11 season.

Cleveland State sent a limited number of student-athletes to the Edinboro Open last season. The Vikings have not sent their team to this event since the 2015-16 season when a pair of Vikings placed at the event.

Cleveland State will contest a pair of duals next weekend, beginning with an EWL match Feb. 8 against Clarion.
