Cheek Places at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Junior Evan Cheek placed at the prestigious Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, as a trio of Vikings competed on the second and final day of the event Tuesday inside McKenzie Arena.

Cheek placed seventh and was the only unseeded wrestler to place at 141 pounds. It marks the second straight season in which a Viking was the only unseeded competitor to place at his weight class in the event.

Cheek finished his tournament in style, posting a dominating performance in his final match of the event, as he defeated No. 4 seed Russell Rohlfing. Cheek posted a takedown fewer than 20 seconds into the proceedings and went on to pick up four near-fall points over the remainder of the period. Cheek increased his lead to 8-0 in the second period and cruised to a 10-1 major decision victory.

It was Cheek's third bonus-point win of the tournament, as he won two of his three matches Monday with bonus points. Cheek's win over Rohlfing also marked his fourth consecutive match in which he did not yield a takedown.

Cheek had begun his day by advancing via a medical forfeit by his opponent. In the consolation quarterfinals, Cheek suffered a heartbreaking defeat to seeded Nic Gil, falling, 2-1, after two tiebreakers periods were contested.

Redshirt senior Nick Corba (184) and redshirt sophomore Caleb Stockmaster (174) both finished one win shy of placing for CSU, as each fell by decision in his lone consolation bout Tuesday. Both Corba and Stockmaster fell to a seeded opponent, and each Viking trailed his bout by just a single point entering the third period. Corba fell, 5-1, while Stockmaster lost, 8-5.

CSU has now had at least one placer in each of the past four Southern Scuffle tournaments.

The Vikings finished in 19th place with 20 points while reigning national champion Penn State won the event.
