Stark Posts Pin in Thanksgiving Throwdown Setbacks

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Cleveland State University wrestling team opened its 2017-18 dual action Tuesday evening by dropping a pair of matches at the Thanksgiving Throwdown at Ohio State's St. John Arena.

In the continuous tri-dual format featuring two mats, CSU fell to Kent State, 36-9, and came up short against No. 2 Ohio State, 43-3.

Redshirt senior Gabe Stark posted a pin against Kent State's wins leader while redshirt freshman Cameron Lathem took down an Ohio State opponent in his first collegiate dual event.

Redshirt senior Nick Corba also became the first Viking to reach the double-digit wins mark Tuesday, doing so in just the third date of competition on the season for CSU.

After dropping his collegiate dual debut against a foe from Kent State, Lathem rebounded in style. He picked up 7-3 win over Brakan Mead of Ohio State at 125 pounds. Mead won an Ohio Division I state title as a high school senior last year.

Junior Sam Matzek nearly started the dual with Ohio State by picking up a win at 141 pounds. He had the lead at the end of the first period, 4-3, but the match would eventually go to sudden victory where he fell, 9-7.

Redshirt freshman Ryan Ford had a similar fate against his Kent State opponent as Matzek did against Ohio State. Ford fell, 3-1, in sudden victory format to his foe at 149 pounds.

However, Stark and Corba were able to cruise to wins against their Golden Flashes opponents.

Stark picked up a win via fall to grab his eighth win of the season, and third pin, at 174 pounds as he pinned foes from Buffalo and Eastern Michigan earlier this year. Stark took down Dylan Barreiro of Kent State, who had entered the day leading KSU with 14 wins and was 5-0 in duals this season. Stark's win was his fifth in a row before he fell to last year's NCAA finalist Bo Jordan of Ohio State.

Corba collected a 7-2 win at 184 pounds over Collin McCracken of Kent State. With his results Tuesday, Corba moved to 10-3 this season.

Cleveland State will resume action next Saturday, Dec. 2, when it travels to Indiana for the Hoosier Duals.
