Shaw & Wheeler Both Split Matches as Runs at NCAA Championship End

NEW YORK, NY - Cleveland State seniors Riley Shaw and Sam Wheeler both split a pair of matches on the second day of competition of the NCAA Championships at Madison Square Garden, ending runs for both grapplers.

Wheeler was first up for CSU today on mat five and earned a 6-4 decision over 12th-seeded Michael Boykin of NC State. Shaw was the next match on the same mat and continued CSU's momentum with a 7-3 victory over Joseph Goodhart of Drexel.

However, both Wheeler and Shaw fell in the round of 16, coming up just short in their quest to earn All-American status.

Wheeler lost a close 3-2 decision to Preston Weigel of Oklahoma State, while 12th seeded Billy Smith of Rutgers used a fall to defeat Shaw.

Shaw and Wheeler both won 30 matches this season, while Shaw became just the 19th wrestler in CSU history to qualify for the NCAA Championships three times.
