CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Riley Shaw, the 12th-ranked heavyweight in the country, won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the Southern Scuffle, while six other Vikings moved on to the second day at the event which began on Friday at McKenzie Arena.
Shaw, who placed fifth at the Southern Scuffle last season, earned a 5-3 win over Patrik Garren of Penn in the second round and followed that with a 12-6 decision over Ethan Hayes of Virginia in the third round.
He will face Max Wessell of Lehigh in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Six other CSU grapplers advanced to compete in the wrestlebacks on Saturday, including 125-pounder John Martin, 141-pounder Mike Carlone and 184-pounder Nick Corba who all posted 2-1 records on the first day of competition.
In addition, 133-pounder Alfredo Gray, 174-pounder Gabe Stark and 197-pounder Sam Wheeler all went 1-1, winning their first consolation round match to advance to day two.
Jayce Carr earned a win in the second round of the consolation bracket before being eliminated in the consolation third round.
The final day of the Southern Scuffle will take place on Saturday (Jan. 2) with action beginning at 9:00 am.
