Willeford and Shaw Place First at the Clarion Open

CLARION, Pennsylvania - The Cleveland State wrestling team competed at the Clarion Open Wrestling Tournament on Sunday (Nov. 2) in their first tournament of the season. Ben Willeford at 125 and Riley Shaw at 285 were crowned champions of the 2014 Clarion Open giving CSU two of the ten titles.  

Willeford won 5 matches defeating Chasen Tolbert of Utah Valley University in the final.  He also knocked off #20 (Wrestling Report) ranked Kory Mines of Edinboro in the semifinal.  Shaw won 4 matches on the day defeating Billy Miller of Edinboro in the final.  He also defeated #9 (Wrestling Report) ranked Joe Stolfi of Bucknell in the semifinal.  Also competing in Shaw's weight class was the #12 ranked wrestler Adam Fager of Utah Valley.  In addition, Dan King and Matt Donohoe both finished in the top 6 at 133 and 165 respectively as both went 5-2 in their weight classes.  Overall, 13 CSU student-athletes wrestled attached and compiled a solid 36-22 overall record.  The Clarion Open was a great kickstart to a long season.

The Viking wrestling team will compete next Saturday (Nov. 9) at the Binghamton Open at 9 a.m.
