Cleveland, Ohio- With over 20 schools and hundreds of wrestlers on hand, Saturday was full of hard fought competition all day long as the Cleveland State wrestling program hosted the Cleveland State Open in the Woodling Gymnasium.

Freshman Riley Shaw led the way for the hometown Vikings, placing fourth at the Open with a strong 4-2 record.

Shaw took home his first win in a 4-2 decision, before falling in his second match-up and having to wrestling his way back. With three straight wins, including a pin, he was able to fight back for that fourth place finish and impressive record. This success in Opens is quickly becoming a trend for the young Viking.

"He's been wrestling well," said Head Coach Ben Stehura on his freshman. "He's placed in every tournament so far and they've all been really tough tournaments. As a true freshman heavyweight that's a sign of progress and work ethic."

Despite Shaw being the only CSU wrestler to place on the day in the top six, multiple Vikings were able to pick up more than one win at the Open.

Matt Donohoe led the other multiple winners with a 3-2 record at 157 pounds, with Ben Willeford going 2-2 at 125 pounds, Daniel King 2-2 at 141 pounds, Corey Carlo 2-2 at 165 pounds, and Nick Anthony 2-2 at 197 pounds for CSU.

With the Open completing its' eighth consecutive year, head coach Ben Stehura is very pleased with how much it is improving with each passing season.

"We had strong competition again this year," Stehura said. "I think it's becoming a fine Open and it's attracting some of the best guys in the country."

The Vikings will be back wrestling as a team next Thursday when they head to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers at 7:00 p.m. in Eastern Wrestling League action.
