CLEVELAND, Ohio - Sophomore Rob West was named Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday (March 6). He is the first CSU tennis player to win the weekly honor.

West, a psychology major who owns a 3.64 GPA, defeated Abram Mamhit 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to help the Vikings to a 5-2 win over Chicago State on Saturday (March 3). He also registered a win at No. 3 doubles with sophomore Steven Wipprecht. Chicago State did not have enough players to fill the spot and forfeited the point.

"Rob prides himself on how hard he works on the court and in the classroom," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "He sets the tone for rest of team and we're proud of him for getting the honor."

West has been an instrumental part to Cleveland State's 10-2 start. He is 15-4 in singles play and owns the team's highest winning percentage (.789). West and Wipprecht also have teamed to go 10-5 in doubles play.

Both Viking tennis teams will play four matches in Hawaii next week, with the women's team starting the trip with a match on March 10 at Hawai'I Manoa. The men start the week at Hawai'i Pacific on March 11.
