Ann Arbor & Minneapolis - The men's and women's teams completed singles play Thursday at the ITA Regionals, which for the men was held in Ann Arbor, while the women traveled to Minneapolis. Sarah Galon and Jenn Myers each won matches on the afternoon.
The women opened up competition at the Regionals in the morning, with Sarah Galon winning her first set, 6-7 (1) to her Illinois opponent before falling, 6-0, 6-2 in the next two sets. Galon rebounded to win her afternoon match over Danielle Mousseau of Minnesota, marking her second win over a Big Ten opponent this season.
"I was disappointed after losing that first match," Galon commented. "But I definitely used it for the next match, and it felt good to end the day on a win."
Jenn Myers and Morgan Ungerott each participated in the tournament, with each player losing in straight sets. Myers came back to beat an opponent from Western Illinois in her second match, notching a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Ungerott dropped her second match after losing two tiebreakers.
"We've got to close out matches if we're going to get into the main draw," coach Brian Etzkin remarked after the day's matches. "But matches like this keep us improving as we continue to play against good opponents. We were happy to get some wins to close the day."
The doubles team of Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott will participate in doubles action against a duo from Ohio State at 2:00 p.m. Friday afternoon.
For the men, Eric Winn dropped a hard-fought decision to an opponent from UIC. After winning the first set 6-4, he served for the match in set two before eventually falling by a score of 7-6 (3) in the set. He lost the deciding set by a score of 6-3.
"Eric played well today," coach David Howell remarked after the match. "But Eric couldn't close the match out and the opponent gained a lot of momentum."
Groleski lost his match in straight sets to an opponent from Ball State. The two will team together for doubles action that is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
