7-0 Sweep Ends Regular Season On A High Note

April 17, 2005

Rocky River, Ohio - The men's tennis team will carry some winning momentum into the Horizon League Championships this week after topping Robert Morris 7-0 on Sunday (April 17). The match split time between two sites after rain forced the competition indoors.

CSU concludes the regular season with an 11-11 overall record to finish at or above .500 in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1983-84 and 1984-85.

The Vikings jumped out early with a sweep of the doubles point before claiming straight-set wins in all six singles matches.

The doubles competition began as scheduled at Malaga Tennis Center, but a dousing rain interrupted play and made the outdoor courts unplayable once it had ceased. After some creative arrangements, the match was moved 10 miles west to River Oaks Racquet Club in Rocky River where play resumed indoors.

"I'm glad that the change in venue didn't affect our play," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We played real aggressive and offensive-minded today. We kept looking to attack and it paid off for us.

"This was a much needed win for us heading into the tournament this week. We have a strong core of veterans who have been through this before. We just need to get hot for three matches at the end of this week and we can be in the national tournament."

The Horizon League Championships begin on Friday (April 23) in Indianapolis.
