Chicago, Ill.-The Cleveland State men's tennis team fell to conference foe UIC 5-2 Saturday (April 15) afternoon in its last away match of the season. UIC downed the women's team 7-0.

The men's team got off to a slow start in doubles, winning one of three matches. The No. 2 duo of Rob West and Dan Singer defeated Enrico Kasjan and Adriano Liccardo 8-5, improving to 8-5 on the season.

In singles play the Vikings went 2-6 with wins in the middle of the lineup. No. 3 Brad Groleski downed Kasjan 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 10-7 to boost his record to 9-9. At No. 5 singles Dan Singer downed Andy Lickhart 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4. Singer is 12-12 for the year.

"We lost a tough one today," said coach Brian Etzkin. "Every single match was close and the doubles point was huge but we couldn't pull through at No. 3 . The other team was just mentally tough and played better on the big points."

The women's team didn't fare much better against UIC with injuries sidelining two of the Vikings. In doubles action the women went 0-2, with a tough 8-6 loss by No. 1 Sarah Galon and Morgon Ungerott. The duo fell to 20-8 on the season. CSU went 0-4 in singles against UIC with 6-0, 6-0 shutouts at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots .

"We were shorthanded today but the players that we did have battled hard," said Etzkin. "No. 1 doubles got as much out of that doubles match as they could. When you're playing the best team in the conference without the whole team it's going to be a little rough."

The loss to UIC marked the end of the women's regular season while the men host John Carroll on Apr. 20 to close out the year.
