Men's Tennis Tops Youngstown 5-2

Cleveland, OH-Solid doubles performances helped the Cleveland State men's tennis team down conference foe Youngstown 5-2 Saturday evening, boosting the Vikings' overall record to 9-11.

The No. 1 duo of Olivier Dhaine and Jay Tee and the No. 2 pair of Rob West and Dan Singer both downed the Penguins 8-6 in doubles action. The teams are 8-5 and 7-5, respectively, on the season. Brad Groleski and Steven Wipprecht also chimed in with an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles. They are 7-5 for the year.

"Today was a great day for us," said coach David Howell. "We just came out and played really well in doubles. Everyone was focused and they took care of business."

CSU continued to play well in singles action, winning four of its six singles matches. No. 3 Groleski topped Brian Meek 6-2, 6-2 for his seventh win of the season. At No. 4 singles Rob West downed Jayson Trapp 6-1, 6-4, ending a recent slump and improving to 10-18 on the season. No. 5 Dan Singer pulled through with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ryan Trapp and No. 6 Steven Wipprecht topped Sarantis Karousis 6-0, 6-3. Wipprecht is now 16-11 for the year.

In the closest match of the day Dhaine, who has led the team at No. 1 singles for much of the year, fell to Scott Kathary 6-3, 7-5.

"Olivier had a rough first set," said Howell. "He didn't hit as well or as clean as he normally does and just wasn't able to get the win. Youngstown had a tough lineup for us, but when you're able to get wins at 4, 5 and 6 like we did today you can win a lot of matches."

The men's team returns to play tomorrow when they host Robert Morris at 2:00p.m. at the Malaga Tennis Center on the CSU campus.
