Cleveland State Tennis Sweeps Wright State

April 1, 2006

Fairfield, OH-The Cleveland State men's and women's tennis teams downed conference foe Wright State 5-2 Saturday afternoon, improving to 8-10 and 14-8, respectively, on the season.

In men's doubles action No. 2 Rob West and Dan Singer downed Drew Jackson and Dan Sundersingh 8-0. Brad Groleski and Steven Wipprecht followed in suit, downing Brian Butt and Craig Smith 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

"No. 3 doubles came up pretty big for us today," said coach Brian Etzkin. "We lost No. 1 and won No. 2 quick, so No. 3 pulling it out at the end got us the doubles point."

CSU continued to play well in singles, winning four of their six matches. Singer got things started with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sindersingh at No. 5 singles. With the Vikings up 2-1, No. 6 Wipprecht downed Michael Hall 6-4, 6-3. Olivier Dhaine then won the clinching point at No. 1 singles, topping Lance Koetter 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). He improves to 11-3 on the season.

"It was a great team win," said Etzkin. "Conference wins aren't easy to come by and we're glad to have this one. Wright State is tough up top so it was imperative that we do well down low today and we did."

The women's team also came out firing in doubles this afternoon with No. 1 Sarah Galon and Morgan Ungerott leading the way with a 9-8 win over Audra Beckett and Tiffani Foster. They are 18-6 for the year. Lindsay Sellers and Kristin Chamberlain defeated Jessica Lee and Megan Laux 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, improving to 13-11.

"All three doubles teams played well," said Etzkin. "Anytime we were down we came back. No. 1 doubles played their best match of the year as a team together."

In singles play Tiffani Foster fell to No. 1 Galon, 6-1, 6-3.

"Sarah has had a couple of tough matches but she came out focused and was aggressive at the right times," said Etzkin.

At the bottom of the Viking lineup No. 4 Morgan Ungerott downed Laura Culbertson 0-6, 6-2, 6-2. Kristin Chamberlain topped Christa Ames 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, boosting her record to 16-9. At No. 6 singles Megan Laux fell to Christine Vogelgesang 7-6 (7-1), 6-2, securing CSU's win.

Both the men and women return to action Sunday, Apr. 2 when they take on Butler.

"It will be a really competitive match tomorrow," said Etzkin. "We haven't beaten them since I've been here so this could be our year. If we compete hard like today we have a good chance to win."

If the weather holds out for tomorrow Cleveland State will take on the Bulldogs at 11:00a.m. at North Central High School. In the case of bad weather the women will play at 10:00a.m. and the men will play at 2:00p.m. at the Butler University campus.
